Umpqua Homes Community Center + Theater Currently, Umpqua Homes for the Handicapped occupies an old residence in Roseburg, where they see clients and hold meetings. Their vision for growth includes the creation of a community center that not only incorporates their offices, but also houses a theater that will be used by the general community. The site, located on a busy street, has space for expansion, and a view of the surrounding hills. After several meetings with both the director and staff of Umpqua Homes for the Handicapped, we were able to develop a program that incorporated their visions into a basic layout. Public areas include meeting spaces, computer and quiet rooms, and the spaces dedicated to the theater program. Efficient use of space behind the stage area includes dressing rooms, space to unload large sets, a green room and storage for props. Parking, accessibility and the creation of a strong street presence rounded out the initial design. The organization is currently in the fundraising phase of the project, and hopes to continue the process of developing the structure and site in the next few years.
